Doctors – Life-Savers or Savings Destroyers…???

Doctor as a profession requires no introduction as they lie everywhere on this planet and are having their presence in both the genders working towards the same goal of saving someone’s life and providing that person a ray of hope. Being a doctor can be a matter of pride for anyone. We should not just call this activity as a mere profession rather should call it a 'Gift of God'.

In the past, many incidents related to health hazards have occurred where doctors had played a very crucial role in controlling things. The latest incident that I remember is EBOLA VIRUS. The incident has taken the world by storm and has taken up the lives of many, but the way doctors have taken care of this virus was exceptional. These doctors get honored with the prestigious award of Time’s Person of the Year.

Proud moment…!!!   Isn’t it…???

The medical science has evolved into manifolds in the past decade or so and inventions are kept on happening in this domain. A patient’s life can be saved in multiple numbers of ways nowadays.

But, there is a concern of mine in this aspect. I am not going to hesitate while stating this that some of the doctors have turned this proud profession into the activity of extreme profiteering and looting. The check-up fee is reaching newer heights every day, giving a strong competition to the current rise in petrol prices. Private practice is increasing day by day from government doctors. They have arranged their multiple sources of incomes in this profession in the form of commission and part in profits. They take a commission from local medicine shops (percentage of profit or per bill amount) and used to refer the patients to those medicine shops only. They get commissions for various tests that they want the patient to go for the treatment from different path labs and laboratories. They make the patients go for the irrelevant test that is not at all required, and some of these health check-up tests are very expensive in nature and cannot be afforded by a normal income patient. They also create a monopoly in terms of the medicines they prescribe to the patient. The medicines that are very difficult to trace in the market and hence only available to the same doctor only are majorly recommended. They are having a part of profit in hospital charges, specialists surgeon referring fee, unnecessary observation of patient in ICU and many more.

In the case where a particular health issue is encountered and from the very beginning it is clear that the identification of the exact issue can only be understood through an MRI, the doctor does not just ask for the MRI, he compels the patient to do the blood test, x-ray, CT-Scan, and many more. These tests do not just create an extra burden on the pocket of the patient, but they also increase tension in his mind. Apart from this, they are totally unnecessary. Now think upon it that how a tensed and depressed person is going to get cured easily in this situation as this will only get worse.

We used to celebrate WORLD YOGA DAY all over the world with pride but the main lifesaver, i.e. Doctors does not prescribe to do Yoga Practice to their patients.

I am sharing some of my ideas to deal with the raised issue ---
  • It should be made compulsory for every doctor to prescribe Yoga Practice to each and every patient in order to provide the patients the long-term health benefits.
  • The license of those doctors who do private practice should be canceled after one major warning.
  • Medicines which are easily available should be prescribed and in critical cases where medicines are available in very less number then it should be arranged by the doctor himself for the patient.
  • Audits should be done on a continuous basis the health and medical centers.

The government should take a step forward in order to solve this highly prevalent issue. Strict policies should be formulated in this aspect from high-level authorities of the country. We as an individual should also safeguard our rights.

I hope that I am able to convey my message strongly to you my reader.
