ENGLISH NEWSPAPER - English Improvement Tool for Students
We all know that the English Language is being declared as the World’s Business Language. The majority of the world’s countries are adopting the English Language as their speaking language. The entire business world is running on English speaking model. Today, a professional member of any organization is required to have proficiency in English on both the Writing and Reading parameters. Knowledge of the English language is quickly becoming a basis for measuring the job candidate’s overall personality. And because of the shift towards this trend, the utmost focus is being shifted to develop the English communication level of the students all around the globe.
Majority of the universities, colleges, educational institutions, etc. have voluntarily made ‘Good knowledge of the English Language’ as the minimum criteria for providing admission to any student. Other things such as past educational performance are becoming secondary nowadays to evaluate a student’s competency and for providing him admission. In order to adapt to this change, students are being provided continuous guidance regarding how and in what manner they can improve their command on English. Besides taking the normal college classes, they have been told to read newspapers, watch English movies, watch English news channels, and basically do everything that will connect them to the real world of English.
But sorry to say, these tactics might be resulting in the improvement in the student’s with regard to communication aspect in the current scenario, but I firmly believe that it will not be going to last much longer. English newspapers are not printed to enhance someone’s vocabulary and nor they are printed to improve someone’s command over any particular language. They are an information source and this is one of the major areas where today’s students are lacking. They don’t have sufficient information or I should say knowledge about the latest happenings in the real world. Having knowledge has become none of any one’s business nowadays. Students have been influenced in a negative manner that if they cannot speak in English then they must be ready to face rejection in the upcoming campus placement rounds Human Resource Managers have adopted the strategy of hiring and firing candidates on the basis of this particular aspect only. I know that having command on any other language besides your native language is very necessary but making the overall judgment on one particular dimension is of no use. It will do no good for anyone.
Have you ever heard that colleges in the United States are teaching their students importance of Hindi or French or say Italian? They don’t even care about all this. The only thing they care about is to improve the overall competency level of their students so that they can perform any given task while working in any business organizations.
In most of the Hindi speaking continents, educational institutions have started to take undue advantage of this trend. They used to charge a huge amount of money by simply including one extra English Class in their curriculum. Private Coaching business had started to grow mainly because of the English Speaking trend in most of the countries where demand for the English language is rising. One can learn any language whatsoever, but he/she should never compromise on gaining knowledge. Students must focus on developing their knowledge base, overall skills and competency instead of focusing on one particular domain. Having proficiency in English does not guarantee that you will be able to climb the ladders of success in a speedy manner, but having sound knowledge about any of the fields will always take you one step ahead of your competitors.
Private educational players are making the students suffer the most. I’m giving a new name to these educational institutions – ‘WONDER INSTITUTES’. In their promotional advertisements, they make bold claims by saying that they can make anyone speak in the English language within 15 – 30 days. Students get themselves enrolled in these institutions and then their English become much worse than what it used to be before taking enrollment. Gradually, after a particular period of time, it starts getting boring and students start running away from them.
Students must give a thought on this. They are continuously compromising on knowledge quotient. I am not favoring knowledge only. There must be an equilibrium in all the dimensions.
